Peter Forton is a 5th generation native of Traverse City. He graduated from Traverse City Senior High School in 1972 and attended Central Michigan University for a short time before enlisting in the United States Air Force where he worked in intelligence operations in both the U.S. and Europe. When his 4-year tour with the military was completed Peter attended the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California to continue his education and passion for photography.
After spending 7 years in the television industry in northern California and St. Louis, Peter returned home to Traverse City where he continued a successful career as a Television News Journalist winning numerous awards from the Associated Press and Michigan Association of Broadcasters. Although he owns a home in Lake Mary, Florida Peter spends most of the year on the road working with Wind Turbine and Power Plant projects throughout the U.S. He has always considered Traverse City his home and returns here to visit family and friends at least twice a year. Most of his spare time is spent exploring the region he’s living in at the time and documenting the landscapes and wildlife with his Nikon equipment. “I’ve had a camera in my hands since I was a little kid and have been a Nikon fan since the early 70’s when I bought my first Nikon while I was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany.”
“All of my work is shot handheld… a preference I developed while working in television. I prefer to capture wildlife and scenery as I find it and tend to shoot from the hip. I’ve been fortunate to have a job that allows me to travel the United States and spend my spare time meeting the people of the region and enjoying the beautiful scenery and wildlife. Thru my photography I hope to share what I’ve discovered in my travels and provide an appreciation for what the United States has to offer those of us fortunate enough to call it our home.”
